Kicking off this holiday season with a DIY project. Whenever I am on the hunt for a
couple new ornaments for the tree I can never find the color palette I am looking for.
So, I always like to make a couple myself each year so I can achieve
color palette perfection.
a couple of paintbrushes
a couple different colors of loose glitter ( i used gold, silver, cooper, white )
washi tape / painters tape
a couple different colors of acrylic paint ( i used cream, pink, mint )
hot glue + glue gun
gold spray paint ( not pictured )
white glue ( not pictured )
paper plates ( not pictured )
Grab your popsicle sticks and hot glue gun to get started. Lay the sticks down in a star
formation ( shown above ) and next place a small dot of hot glue in the center of the sticks
and glue them together. I let them sit over night to dry but about 20 minutes should be fine.
The first ornament is the one that inspired it all. I remember making little stars dusted in
glitter that looked just like this when I was younger. It is a memory that has always stuck.
Use one of the popsicle stick stars created earlier that has had time to dry. Next, lay a strip of
white glue down the center of each popsicle stick and spread with a paint brush. ( *note*
dip the paint brush in a little bit of warm water to help the glue spread evenly and easily )
Quickly, before the glue starts to dry, hold the glue covered star over a paper plate and
generously dump glitter all over. I kept one stick spare to hold on to, to make the star easy
to handle. I covered the bare stick with glue and glitter after the rest of the arms have dried.
Repeat with as many colors and popsicle sticks as you please!
Next up we have a color blocked star with a golden base.
Grab some of the blank stars that have already been glued together and spray them gold.
Wait about 10 to 15 minutes and then flip them over and spray the other side.
Once the stars have dried on both sides — grab some washi tape and tape off the ends.
Use the acrylic paint to paint the ends that are taped off and let dry.
Once the paint is dry—remove the washi tape to reveal a nice clean line.
The last one is a glitter tipped star ornament which combines techniques from the two above.
First paint your stars entirely with the acrylic paint on both sides.
Set aside for 10-15 minutes to dry.
Once dry, tape off the ends like you did in no. 2. Next, paint the ends with glue and dust with
glitter like did in no. 1. Let dry 10 - 15 minutes and then shake off the loose glitter and
remove the tape.
And there you have it! Now that all the stars decorated we need to make a way to hang
the ornaments from the tree.
Get the hot glue gun out again and cut serval strips of ribbon about 2 inches in length.
Place a dot of glue to hold the ribbon together. Then place a second dot of glue on the backside
( just decide which side is the backside ). Next, gently press the ribbon down hold for a second
and let dry.
And there you have it—three different handmade ornaments to add to you tree/decor
this year. These little stars also make good gift wrap toppers or decoration on a basket.
